"Void Station 57" - GenCon 2008

The crew of the space ship "Warlock" comes out of hyperdrive at "Void Station 57" only to find the station a total wreck and completely dark, without power or oxygen. Running out of air themselves they are forced to enter the station, try to restart the power and figure out what went wrong....

(We pretended that the figures were in space suits. Pretending is fun...)

The Captain is more than a little nervous because he is a very close friend with the stations Commander. In fact she is an extremely close friend, if you know what I mean.....

A door from a cargo hold into a station junction is opened to reveal very unfriendly, strangely constructed robots.

The crates and ripped up machinery offer lots of places to hide from gun fire.....

The Captain protects his medic from harm...

This robot is even larger than the last ones, and weirder too!

Stepping into a new section of the station the players are surprised to find strange alien plant forms growing throughout the room. In the dim light of their flashlights they see what appears to be egg chambers. Then they detect movement....

Some of these eggs have hatched!

A well tossed grenade takes out a large number of the insect like aliens.

After several other rooms the players finally reach the central computer room. Their only hope is to wrestle power away from the alien presence that has bonded with the main frame. This alien presence has other ideas, however, sending in first a large robot to dispatch the players....

After that robot was taken care of an even worse and more diabolical robot appears....

Each round the mechanic (bottom right) tries desperately to regain control of the stations computer systems. When he does the light in the top of the tower is rigged to light up, when he fails it goes off.

This strange new robot wades into the players and the medic is ripped into two pieces.

Wait! The captain recognizes the figure hanging from the front of the robot. It's his close friend and Commander of Void Station 57! She has been absorbed into the murderous machinery.

The engineer continues to battle the computer!

As the engineer begins to win the battle against the computer the stations Commander regains consciousness. "Kill me" she begs to her friend and lover. "Kill me before I hurt you!"

But it was too late, she watches on in horror as her mechanical arms rip the Captain to shreds. Only at the last minute does the engineer and other surviving player character finish her off and restore power (and oxygen) to the station.

And it's a good thing too, they only had 5 minutes of air left to them.......

I love close games. And I do have a bit of a reputation of, well, let's just say that if the players don't make, it then the players don't make it. Not every story has a happy ending in my book. The possibility that the players might not win tends to keep things much more exciting. This game was definitely one that kept everyone on the edge of their seats!
